On Wednesday, July 30th, Junior Civic League hosted it’s first ever Blood Drive. The event was held at St. Mary’s Family Life Center from 12 to 6pm. The event attracted JCL members as well as those in the community with a willingness to give. According to the Red Cross, this area is experiencing a shortage of blood supply at this time. There were 34 participants at the JCL blood drive and the drive was able to provide 27 productive units of blood. Therefore, making this event a huge success for our community!
Junior Civic League would like to thank all of you who gave your time and your blood to help save the lives of others.
Once again, the Junior Civic League helped to sponsor the Annual Bookworm. Bookworm is the summer reading program which has grown to include children from preschool through the 12th grade. The program features story times and special events throughout the summer. This year’s theme was "Catch the Reading Bug". Junior Civic League members volunteered for several events throughout the 2008 event.
The Bookworm Kickoff Party was held at the Northside Library on the evening of June 9th. Junior Civic League members were there to help the children register. On Wednesday, July 16th, JCL volunteers helped with the school-age craft. The Final Bash, also known this year as the "Ugly Bug Ball" was held on Wednesday, July 30th in the afternoon at the Northside Library. Junior Civic League members were on hand to help with this outdoor event. There were approximately 250 children at this event which included bubbles, games and the release of butterflies.
The Annual Kid’s Fun Run was held in the park on Saturday, May 24th. This year, we had nearly 100 kids participate in the event which is held each year during the Feast of the Flowering Moon. The event includes children through the age of 10. The children are divided into age groups and then given a specific distance to run. The kids age 4 and under run 40 yards, the 5 and 6 year olds run 60 yards, the 7 and 8 year olds run 80 yards and the 9 and 10 year olds run 90 yards. Junior Civic League provides a participation ribbon for each child and the top finishers in each age division are awarded a medal. Refreshments were served following the event for all of the thirsty runners.
Everyone, especially the kids, had a great time and we experienced wonderful weather that morning. If you missed the Fun Run this year, plan to join us in 2009!
